Europe Trip (15): Arrived in Luzern (Lucerne), Switzerland

After a TGV train journey from Paris via Basel, we arrived in Luzern (Lucerne) in the afternoon. The train station is integrated with Luzern's tourist information office, shopping malls and eateries at the basement. We took our time to take pictures within and outside of the train station.

From the train station, we walked towards our hotel, which is on the other side of the lake, by crossing the Seebruecke bridge, which gives a magnificent view of Lake Lucerne. Well, we can actually take bus or trolleybus (just one bus stop away), but we decided to walk since we bring quite a lot of luggage.

We stayed at Hotel Des Alpes, which is conveniently located in the heart of the pedestrian-only downtown of Luzern, just in front of the chapel bridge (Kapellbrucke).

After checking into the hotel, we didn't have time to take a rest because we immediately started our journey to mount Pilatus, via Kriens and Frakmuntegg. (to be continued)

Europe Trip (14): From Paris to Luzern via Basel

On Monday, 8 June 2009, in early morning, we left Paris for Luzern, Switzerland. A Kide is very kind to send us right to Gare de l'Est, which means the "East station", the train station where our train departed.

We arrived at the station at around 5:50am Paris time, while the train only departed at around 6:20am, so we had some time to take pictures inside the station. The kids were very happy to be able to have their pictures taken in front of two European high-speed trains: France's TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse) and German's ICE (InterCity-Express).

We took the TGV Lyria train to Basel, Switzerland, passing through French cities such as Strasbourg, Colmar and Mulhouse. According to my GPS, the train zoomed up to 300km/h especially on the Paris-Strasbourg leg, although it seemed to be a bit slower once the train passed through Strasbourg to Basel.

At Basel train station, my wife managed to buy Luxemburgerli macarons from Sprungli. One of our favourites, indeed. :) Unfortunate...

We bought some ice creams at the end of the Pont des Arts bridge before entering the Louvre via its Sully wing. Since it was a Tuesday, the Louvre museum was closed for the day, so there’s not much people traffic there, allowing us to enjoy taking the photographs near the Louvre pyramid and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel.

We then met mbak Enik near Louvre, and we proceeded to have lunch at McDonald's which is located along Rue de Rivoli, one of the most famous roads in Paris, not far from Louvre. After lunch, my wife, my mother and mbak Enik then visited a duty free shop around the area, while I took Irza and Inka for sightseeing around the area. We walked past Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel monument towards the Jardin du Carrousel garden behind it. After tak...

Europe Trip (3): Paris City Centre: Île de la Cité and Around

On Tuesday morning, 2 June 2009, a Kide dropped us off at the nearest RER station around Châtenay-Malabry, Robinson (pronounced: ro-bang-song). Our first destination for the day is the centre of the Paris: the Île de la Cité island and its most famous attraction: Notre-Dame cathedral. Since we enter the Robinson station from the side entrance, we had to use the automated machine to buy the tickets for the RER train, using Euro coins since the machine doesn’t accept notes. Luckily, we had enough coins. Only couple of later then we found out that at the main entrance, there’s a ticket counter where we can buy tickets usin...

Europe Trip (2): Châtenay-Malabry, Eiffel Tower, Seine River Tour

On Monday, 1 June 2009, which was our first full-day in Paris, still recovering from jet-lag, we took our time in the morning to walk through A Kide's residence at Châtenay-Malabry.

Late morning, we had A Kide's driver, om Join, to take us to the most popular tourist attraction in Paris: the Eiffel tower. We needed to queue for about 1.5 hours to buy the tickets before we can climb the tower. We bought the tickets which can bring us up to the top floor. The price is €13 for adult, and €7.50 for child.

Note that they only sell tickets to walk-in customers, and the tickets can only be used on the same day they are purchased. I checked their website that found out that they are planning to provide online reservation services for all visitors, but that would only be available end of this year.

We took the lift directly to the second floor, skipping the first floor. We immediately circling the area and take pictures to all the different directions. One of our favourite directions f...

Europe Trip (1): From Singapore to Paris via Dubai

Inka and Irza have came back from their mid-year holiday in Paris and surrounding regions, together with their father (that’s me), their mother and their grandmother (that’s my mother).

We initially wanted to take the Singapore Airlines’ direct flight to Paris, especially since the return flight would be using the new Airbus A380 plane and the price was also quite cheap at that time. Unfortunately, it took quite some time for our Schengen visa to be approved, so by the time the visa is approved, the price has went up considerably and we had to find another option. We didn’t want to buy/issue the tickets first before our visa was approved. Luckily Emirates started to launch their promotions, and they offered the Singapore-Paris ticket (return trip, via Dubai) for only S$785 (adult) and S$618 (child), inclusive of all the surcharges and taxes. We immediately bought the tickets without hesitation.

We left Singapore on Sunday, 31 May 2009, in the morning. At Changi airport, we met Ha...

I just posted my 1000th update on Twitter. Most of them are not really my direct updates, though, since they are cross-posted from Kronologger.

Nothing much special to call for a celebration. It just a reaffirmation that I’m now more into micro-blogging than the actual blogging itself.

Pretty sad, indeed…

Date: Saturday, 14 February 2009
Location: Pasir Ris Park, Tampines Park Connector, Pasir Ris Town Park, east of Singapore

This is part of my Singapore Cycling Tour series:

On Saturday, 14 February 2009, I brought Inka and Irza, with our bicycles mounted on the bike carrier, to Pasir Ris Park. Located on the eastern end of Singapore, this park is another great location for cycling in Singapore, other than East Coast Park, Bishan Park and Pulau Ubin.

We explored the whole area of Pasir Ris Park, from west to east. West side of the park is where you will find the huge playground complex, cater for children of all ages. It was also the location of a gathering and birthday party, almost two years ago.

There's a horse riding lessons and pony rides centre called Gallop Stable at the southern end of the park, near carpark C. The eastern end of the park is located near two r...

Singapore Cycling Tour (2): Bukit Batok East, Ulu Pandan and Jurong Park Connector

Date: 17 January 2009 and 7 February 2009
Location: Bukit Batok East, Ulu Pandan Park Connector, Jurong Park Connector

This is part of my Singapore Cycling Tour series:

1. East Coast Park and Coastal Park Connector

On 17 January 2009, I was cycling with Irza near our residence around Bukit Batok East, and found this Ulu Pandan Park Connector along Bukit Batok East heading southwest. On 7 February 2009, we tried to venture the park connector towards Jurong East.

However, I am a bit disappointed with this park connector. After greeted with a set of twelve zodiac-theme animal stone statues near Bukit Batok East Garden, we encountered very high stairs next to Keming Primary School. So both myself and Irza needed to carry the bicycles upstairs. Wished that we took the roadside instead.

Leaving Bukit Batok towards Jurong East, we had to bring our bicycles on the overhead bridge across the PIE. It was very hot, not many trees around the area. After crossing the PIE, we found o...

Deepavali This Year Moved to a Saturday

This year’s Deepavali, which previously has been tentatively set on a Sunday, 15 November 2009 (which means the following Monday, 16 November 2009 would be a public holiday), has been brought forward one month earlier, on Saturday, 17 October 2009.

When Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower releases the list of Singapore public holiday every year, the date set for Deepavali is always tentative because it has to be checked against the Indian Almanacs when they become available. Last year, MOM also moved the Deepavali date albeit only one day earlier, from Tuesday to Monday. It is just so unfortunate that for this year, the date is being moved from a Sunday to a Saturday.

This means that the public holiday will only benefit those who are working on Saturdays, and that Monday, 16 November 2009 is no longer declared as a public holiday. :(

In Singapore, if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will also be a public holiday. For example, since Hari Raya Puasa for this year ...

Singapore Cycling Tour (1): East Coast Park and Coastal Park Connector

Date: Sunday, 11 January 2009
Location: East Coast Park and Coastal Park Connector

This would be my first album entry on my "Singapore Cycling tour" along parks and park connectors network around Singapore.

As I have mentioned last time, East Coast Park is one of our favourite cycling place in Singapore. On 11 January 2009, we (myself, Inka and Irza) tried to venture the eastern area of East Coast Park, and the cycling track led us to a park connector called the Coastal Park Connector, which links East Coast Park with Changi Beach Park.

Since we rented the bicycles (tandem bicycles for myself and Inka, and a smaller bicycle for Irza, we haven't bought our bicycles at that time) from a kiosk at Raintree Cove, we did not plan to venture up to Changi Beach Park since we had to go back and return our bikes and I didn't want to risk tiring the kids. However, we did reach the best stretch of the coastal park connector, which is the long straight track along Changi Coast Rd, just ne...

Indo-Sing-GaPenting and IndoSing-Photographer BBQ Gathering

Date: Saturday, 31 January 2009
Location: Muda Ikhsan's residence, Moonstone Lane.

Again, Ikhsan is hosting a gathering event for the Indo-Sing community. This time, he's hosting a BBQ gathering event for the Indo-Sing-GaPenting and IndoSing-Photographer communities.

The signature menus featured are Ikhsan's sate padang, and the famous sate Braddell. Unfortunately, the famous sate Moonstone Lane was not featured since the chef was already busy preparing sate padang and lontong sayur, which turn out to be wonderfulicious. :)

The kids were also having a great time playing with their new friends, Reya and Abel.

Looking forward to the next Indo-Sing-* gathering. :)
