The train station is integrated with Luzern's tourist information office, shopping malls and eateries at the basement. We took our time to take pictures within and outside of the train station. From the train station, we walked towards our hotel, which is on the other side of the lake, by crossing the Seebruecke bridge, which gives a magnificent view of Lake Lucerne. Well, we can actually take bus or trolleybus (just one bus stop away), but we decided to walk since we bring quite a lot of luggage. We stayed at <a href="http://www.desalpes-luzern.ch/index.cfm?Page=000&amp;CFID=2066426&amp;CFTOKEN=24413190">Hotel Des Alpes</a>, which is conveniently located in the heart of the pedestrian-only downtown of Luzern, just in front of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapellbr%C3%BCcke">chapel bridge</a> (Kapellbrucke). After checking into the hotel, we didn't have time to take a rest because we immediately started our journey to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilatus_%28mountain%29">mount Pilatus</a>, via <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilatus_%28mountain%29">Kriens</a> and <a href="http://www.traveladventures.org/continents/europe/frakmuntegg.shtml">Frakmuntegg</a>. (<i>to be continued</i>) http://indrapr.multiply.com/photos/album/323/Europe_Trip_15_Arrived_in_Luzern_Lucerne_Switzerland Fri, 4 Sep 2009 06:53:45 -0000 http://indrapr.multiply.com/photos/album/322/Europe_Trip_14_From_Paris_to_Luzern_via_Basel On Monday, 8 June 2009, in early morning, we left <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris">Paris</a> for <a href="http://www.luzern.org/en/welcome.cfm">Luzern</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland">Switzerland</a>. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/rus.nurhadi">A Kide</a> is very kind to send us right to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gare_de_l%27Est">Gare de l'Est</a>, which means the "East station", the train station where our train departed. We arrived at the station at around 5:50am Paris time, while the train only departed at around 6:20am, so we had some time to take pictures inside the station. The kids were very happy to be able to have their pictures taken in front of two European high-speed trains: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France">France</a>'s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TGV">TGV</a> (Train a Grande Vitesse) and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany">German</a>'s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercity-Express">ICE</a> (InterCity-Express). We took the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TGV_Lyria">TGV Lyria</a> train to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basel">Basel</a>, Switzerland, passing through French cities such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strasbourg">Strasbourg</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colmar">Colmar</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulhouse">Mulhouse</a>. According to my <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System">GPS</a>, the train zoomed up to 300km/h especially on the Paris-Strasbourg leg, although it seemed to be a bit slower once the train passed through Strasbourg to Basel. At Basel train station, <a href="http://ollala.multiply.com/">my wife</a> managed to buy <a href="http://www.spruengli.ch/spruengli/geschichte-luxemburgerli.php?lang=en">Luxemburgerli</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macaron">macarons</a> from <a href="http://www.spruengli.ch/">Sprungli</a>. Since it was a Tuesday, the Louvre museum was closed for the day, so there’s not much people traffic there, allowing us to enjoy taking the photographs near the Louvre pyramid and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. We then met mbak Enik near Louvre, and we proceeded to have lunch at McDonald's which is located along Rue de Rivoli, one of the most famous roads in Paris, not far from Louvre. Our first destination for the day is the centre of the Paris: the Île de la Cité island and its most famous attraction: Notre-Dame cathedral. Since we enter the Robinson station from the side entrance, we had to use the automated machine to buy the tickets for the RER train, using Euro coins since the machine doesn’t accept notes. Late morning, we had A Kide's driver, om Join, to take us to the most popular tourist attraction in Paris: the <a href="http://www.tour-eiffel.fr/teiffel/uk/">Eiffel tower</a>. We needed to queue for about 1.5 hours to buy the tickets before we can climb the tower. We bought the tickets which can bring us up to the top floor. The price is €13 for adult, and €7.50 for child. Note that they only sell tickets to walk-in customers, and the tickets can only be used on the same day they are purchased. I checked their website that found out that they are planning to provide online reservation services for all visitors, but that would only be available end of this year. We initially wanted to take the <a href="http://www.singaporeair.com/">Singapore Airlines</a>’ direct flight to Paris, especially since the return flight would be using the new <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A380">Airbus A380</a> plane and the price was also quite cheap at that time. Unfortunately, it took quite some time for our <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement">Schengen visa</a> to be approved, so by the time the visa is approved, the price has went up considerably and we had to find another option. We didn’t want to buy/issue the tickets first before our visa was approved. We explored the whole area of Pasir Ris Park, from west to east. West side of the park is where you will find the huge playground complex, cater for children of all ages. Last year, MOM also <a href="http://www.qppstudio.net/public-holidays-news/singapore_001151.htm">moved the Deepavali date albeit only one day earlier</a>, from Tuesday to Monday. It is just so unfortunate that for this year, the date is being moved from a Sunday to a Saturday.</p> <p>This means that the public holiday will only benefit those who are working on Saturdays, and that Monday, 16 November 2009 is no longer declared as a public holiday. :(</p> <p>In Singapore, if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will also be a public holiday. On 11 January 2009, we (myself, Inka and Irza) tried to venture the eastern area of East Coast Park, and the cycling track led us to a park connector called the <a href="http://www.mrbrown.com/blog/2008/01/first-ride-of-2.html">Coastal Park Connector</a>, which links <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Coast_Park">East Coast Park</a> with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changi_Beach_Park">Changi Beach Park</a>.
